This projects involves rear additions to an existing period dwelling subject to a Heritage Overlay. The additions are conceived around a walled garden, with the wall acting as an organising device for services and functions to be hidden behind as necessary, leaving a pure inner sanctuary. The rare characteristic of a rear street frontage – which isn’t just parallel to the street outside, but perpendicular to it – allows for the walled garden to open out along the axis of the street and utilise the street as ‘borrowed’ landscape for spatial and social opportunities that would otherwise not be afforded by a private backyard alone.
